History of African Aerodynamic Engineering.

Central African Throwing Weapons (Kpinga & Mambele)

The multi-bladed throwing knives developed by ethnic groups such as the Azande, Nzakara, and Mangbetu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic are masterclasses in aerodynamics.

Aerodynamic Engineering: These weapons feature multiple sharp protrusions branching out at different angles. This heavy, multi-pronged configuration ensures that no matter how the weapon spins or hits, a lethal edge or point makes contact with the target.

Flight Stabilisation: The specific weight distribution allowed warriors to throw them with a flat, spinning trajectory. They could travel up to 45 metres, slicing through the air with incredible stability.

Symbol of Status: Beyond their battlefield utility, these weapons evolved into revered luxury items. Highly polished, intricately forged iterations were carried by elite rulers and warriors as potent status symbols. 

Mambele throwing axes from the Mangbetu people are evidence of black Africans creating aerodynamic projectiles. 


KPINGA
The oldest kpinga (and its variant, the mambele) date back to around 1000 AD when blacksmithing and iron-working emerged in Central Sudan and the Sahel regions. However, similar curved throwing sticks and blades from the broader family of weapons date as far back as 1350 BC, as suggested by wall sculptures in ancient Libya. 

The traditional multi-bladed throwing knives historically used by Central African groups (like the Azande, Makaraka, and Mangbetu) are culturally significant.


FLYING STICKS
While returning boomerangs are closely tied to Indigenous Australian culture, Black African societies independently developed non-returning, curved throwing sticks used for warfare and hunting. 

The Sudanic Throwing Sticks: Prior to 1800, communities across the Sahel, Sudan, and Central Africa crafted flattened, curved wooden clubs. These used basic aerodynamic principles to fly straight, stable, and over long distances to bring down birds or small game.

The Evolution into "Hungamunga": In Central Africa, these curved wooden structures eventually evolved into the multi-bladed, metallic throwing knives known as Kpinga or Hungamunga. While highly stylized and used as status symbols among elite warriors, they were devastating ranged weapons rather than decorative ornaments.

African Aeronautics

The first ever manned flying aircraft was a hot-air balloon on 21 November 1783. It was made by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier & Marquis François d'Arlandes. They flew a distance of 5,5 miles (8851 metres) in Paris for 25 minutes at about an altitude of 3000 feet (914 metres). The balloon was made of paper-lined silk & heated by burning straw & wool. Orville & Wilbur Wright would then make the first mechanical flying aircraft in 17 December 1903 called the Wright Flyer which flew for 12 seconds. Since then, a lot of progress has been made in the aerospace field. 

Africans, arguably made artisanal & hobby flying crafts in precolonial antiquity using various found materials but likely none were manned aircraft. 

We now have African aeronautical engineers with the knowledge & capability of designing & manufacturing professional flying aircraft. So today (7 May 2026), I decided to compile the list of African-made aircraft below: 
Alkan AT-802 from Ethiopia. 
Helwan HA-300 is a lightweight supersonic aircraft from Egypt. 
Air Tractor AT-802U is a Nigerian assembled American aircraft. 
AHRLAC Mwari is a South African reconnaissance aircraft. 
SkyBoy aircraft from Uganda built by Innocent Mugabi. 
Skyleader 400 & Skyleader 600 by Airplanes Africa Limited in Tanzania is an ultralight aircraft of Czech origin. 

Egypt's Helwan HA-300

We have to note that only the Helwan HA-300, AHRLAC Mwari & SkyBoy aircraft were conceptualised, designed & manufactured in Africa. I also left out aircraft made by Apartheid South Africa because they officially classified themselves as European until the end of Apartheid. 


I made this list because I felt that Africans, myself included, could surely make better aircraft than this with modern technical knowledge.

Is the future really airborne?

Here is something they didn't consider when they waved away the idea of flying cars; no tyres. 

And if everyone used vertical take-off vehicles, road networks would become abandoned & perhaps overrun with vegetation & animals. How would safari trips happen in a flying car? Maybe very easily now that I think of it.

So the only real danger of an evtol is malfunction & crash landing into some important infrastructure. Something that already happens with cars. Can this be solved with ballistic parachutes? Are aircraft less likely to crash because there a so few of them or is air travel simply safer because of less obstacles to avoid? What then when more aircraft are added? Would it be just as easy to fly? One YouTuber  mentioned something interesting; cars heading in different coordinations could travel at different heights - I imagine vehicles heading in a northerly direction could travel at 800 metres above ground & vehicles heading in a southerly direction could travel at 600 metres above ground or something similar.

The only other problem if vertical take-off vehicles become commonplace is traditional combustion engine mechanics might lose their jobs unless they can adapt to the new technology. The new aircraft would also likely be more electric, so traditional petrol stations would have to repurpose themselves... 

Think of these benefits: 
• Minimal traffic, 
• shorter commute time, 
• no potholes & 
• no need for tyres. 

Are these benefits people are willing to have by conquering a fear of heights in electric flying cars & electric flying motorcycles? I think many would be willing to brave their fear of heights for the four above-mentioned benefits.

"The shortest line between two points is a straight line."

"The shortest distance between two points is a straight line." is a quote by Ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse. 

This is not so much a mathematical concept as it is simple commonsense. Ignoring potential obstacles, the shortest path between two points is a path directly towards the other point.

Flying cars already exist but their implementation is tricky because of the perceived dangers of them malfunctioning, falling out of the sky & damaging infrastructure. Whereas if a vehicle on the ground malfunctions, it can be stopped on the side of the road or crashed into an arrestor bed. 


I've been searching some information on heavy-duty vertical take-off aircraft (helicopters) & found aircraft such as the Mil Mi-26 of the Soviet Union/Russia & the Boeing CH-47 Chinook. Both these aircraft have a cruise speed of over 250 km/h, both can lift over ten tons (i. e. over 70 people & their luggage) & both can travel over 400 km without refueling. They cost ten times less than the Boeing 737 most commonly used in South African flights & about the approximate price of eight buses. What I am thinking is custom made Mil Mi-26 & Boeing CH-47 Chinook aircraft with passenger seats, passenger windows, some lighter carbon fibre fittings. This could be done to make an air service that works like a bus service, using shorter range stops to pick up people at select launching pads as opposed to airports with extended runways. Just several small patches of landing pads with a separate parking lot to make an airbus stop/micro airport setup. This could be as an (air)bus service for people who need to travel 100 km to 300 km. The advantages could be; 
1) no traffic, 
2) shorter travel time & 
3) no road/rail infrastructure (& it's associated infrastructure problems) needed. 

Taking into account that these aircraft - the Mi Mi-26 & Chinook cost about US$ 3,5 million a year to maintain including fuel (that's US$ 9600 a day), a ticket for a trip could be US$ 48 per passenger for the air service to cover costs. Provided that the aircraft are carrying a full load of passengers each trip. 

If my concept of vertical-axis wind-turbine powered electric vehicles comes to reality & translated into aircraft, we could have aircraft that need less external power whether it be kerosene or electric to make a full trip.

What I don't really understand about modern automotive manufacturing...

Growing up without much, I learnt to do without items of opulence. Today, I still appreciate minimalism & things that focus on absolute necessity rather than luxury. This taste transcends into my taste in cars. I've never really understood the concept of giant cars with massaging seats & "ambient lighting" - I understand that it must be nice but what is the core purpose of a vehicle? To get an individual from point A to point B under a certain speed limit. And as much as we appreciate supercars, they would have to travel under a national speed limit to really make sense. If your national speed limit is 120 km/h (75 mph), what use is a vehicle that goes faster than that? 

I'd like a commuter car to be three-wheeled (two front wheels & one back wheel), an electric vehicle with a speed limit of no more than 125 km/h (78 mph) & a 100 to 150 km (62 to 93 mile) 
range make sense to me. And, of course, it needs to have the capacity to carry at least 500 kg (1102 lb) for the groceries, giving friends/family a lift & moving items around with a two front seats & single back seat arrangement. Vibrating seats & touch screens can wait, this is the blueprint of my vehicles should I start a vehicle making factory. 

I wrote this blog after seeing this vehicle called the Masserschmidt Kabinen Roller & wondered why aren't there more three-wheeled, compact vehicles like the Microlino & Masserschmidt Kabinen Roller... The safety & enclosure of a motorcar with the simplicity of a motorcycle. 

Today, we have people in giant diesel vans (i. e. pick-up trucks in America) travelling alone to simply buy groceries & that's not what diesel vans were meant for. Diesel vans for me - were meant for carrying big work tools, a small workforce, construction equipment & perhaps farm animals. If your trade is not technical, manual work — my above-described vehicle (second paragraph) should suffice for a daily commuter.

Why Africa seems to lag so behind when compared to the rest of the world.

I've always felt that Africa is given an unfair spotlight in certain fields, primarily technology & quality of life. The thing is, technology is often made in one part of the world then spreads across the region before spreading worldwide. While the wheel is commonplace today, it was made in Persia before spreading across the world. Austronesians, Australasians, trans-Saharan Africans & Native American tribes did not use the wheel until they learnt the technology from someone else. This goes for other technologies such as the firearm & electricity. In fact, neither the wheel, electricity or the firearm were invented or discovered in Europe. These three essential technologies of the modern world were all Asian. Technology spreads depending on it's usefulness. 

Why we did not develop our own technology in Africa despite seeing it from other peoples is because in sub-Saharan Africa we rejected a lot of developments due to simple complacency among other things. We almost didn't believe anything was greater than our way of life. Some African nations called the gun, the "coward's weapon" just to show how disdainful Africans were of Western technology. So even if we did see many modern technologies on journeys & from colonisers, we didn't think that they were better than our way of life on most occasions & technologies we saw as better or superior, we - obviously - quickly adopted. This was the southeast African mentality. 

I can quote two lectures online of people more educated than myself on why Africa didn't develop the same technologies that Eurasia managed to develop, one cites simple geography & the other cites modern misunderstandings of ancient Africa but I'm going to note that culture & the accepted ideas of a given people played a role in many African nations remaining unaccepting of foreign technology. In some regions, colonisers might have caused so much damage that anything they came up with from their clothes, food & technology may have been rejected. It was not lack of intellectual capacity that made Africa lag behind Europe & Asia but more culture, environment & geography coming together to prevent the adoption of new technologies. 

The quality of life in Africa correlates with our experiences; Africa is a large, hot, hostile continent... we have the common idea that possessions are not permanent so we often didn't bother in making non-permanent items, especially in southeast Africa. This was the same for Australasians & Native Americans as well. The only reason it seems like the southern African way of life is unique & exotic may be simply due to our skin colour. There is no other way to put it because on other continents they lived lifestyles that focused less on possessions as well. There are "uncontacted tribes" today in modern America & Asia who have not discovered the wheel & might be considered less developed than most African countries. 

Despite all this; the destabilisation of our nations, way of life & hostile environments - Africa has made a lot of contributions towards the development of the modern world. Comparing African countries to China by claiming that China was one of the poorest countries in the world thirty years ago works in humiliating Africa. Sure. But putting into context that China's massive population shares one language & national ideal while Africa's nations were forced into ethnic conflicts through European-made national borders & dealt with unfair deals in terms of land & mining since the 1800s will make you understand that China had a sociocultural advantage & was given a further economic advantage when the world (i. e. USA & associates) made China a giant manufacturing plant. There's no reason an African nation focused on agriculture, shelter, industry & defence couldn't be successful even if that African nation never reaches the heights of China & Europe. 

Our quality of life in Africa needs to be a priority or we'll forever be just the struggling, malnourished, corrupt Dark Continent. We cannot compare ourselves to other continents when we were clearly dealt a different set of cards.

A list of black public figures who have helped progress Africa & black people worldwide. 

Piankhi: A ruler of ancient Egypt who created the 25th dynasty of Egyptian pharoahs. 
Queen Amanirenas of the Kingdom of Kush: A Nubian queen who lost her eye in battle against the Romans. She is famous for leading her armies against Roman expansion in the late 1st century BC and for her fierce resistance, which ultimately led to a peace treaty that preserved her kingdom's independence. 
Marcus Garvey: A political figure who promoted black independence in the Caribbean & the USA.  
Dr. Thomas Mensah: A Ghanaian-American inventor & engineer who pioneered fibre-optic technology. 
Thomas Sankara: A political figure of post-colonial Africa who sought to make Burkina Faso a self-sufficient country. 
Kofi Anan: Former Secretary General of the United Nations.  
Kwame Nkrumah: A founder of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which is now the AU. He sought to make Ghana self-sufficient with grain silos. 
John Langalibalele Dube: Founder & first president of the South African Natives National Congress (SANNC) which became the African National Congress (ANC). He founded Ilanga newspaper & Ohlange High School. 
Charles "Buddy" Bolden: Creator of the jazz music genre. 
Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert: Father of reggae music. 
Pelé: Brazilian footballer who holds multiple records in football. 
Wilt Chamberlain: American basketball player who holds multiple records in basketball. 
Usain Bolt: Jamaican sprinter who holds multiple athletics records. 

These are just a few people of black (African) origin who have helped the black race obtain some dignity. I left out some controversial figures who may have caused more harm than good.

Notable inventions by black South Africans include

How I would create a public transport system from scratch.

Public transport in South Africa is a warzone & if my plans here were to be implemented, we'd have to quell the violence & offer exclusive deals with certain drivers & transport organisations. 

But if there was nothing in place & I would have to start from scratch, this is how I would do it. 

• Bring back rail: Rail is the cheapest form of transport worldwide & reduces road traffic allowing road infrastructure to need less maintenance. It is also often the faster option. We wouldn't need high-speed trains, just typical 150 km/h modern trains for the people. 
A simple rail service like all sensible countries.

• The future is electric: We have to start with electric vehicles today & for a bonus, they could be locally-made. 

• Big buses are destroying the land: We never noticed this but big buses weigh heavily on road infrastructure & are devastating when they are involved in road accidents. So both big buses & minibuses would be replaced with midi-buses. 
A midibus would be the symbol of my national transport service after minibuses & buses are phased out.

• Sheltered bus stops: It rains, gets windy & unbearablely hot/sunny & sometimes even snows. So we need to make concrete bus stops with benches & are sheltered from the elements. This would help in; a) elders have a place to sit while waiting for transport, b) people sheltered from the elements, c) known & identifiable marked places to wait for transport. These are the only places that the national midi-bus transport service would be allowed to load & offload passengers. 
A simple sheltered, concrete bus stop like all sensible countries. 

• Low-cost meter taxis/rickshaws: Transport apps have gained popularity in recent times, there could be a national transport app where you could hail a car (affordable EV) or an electric rickshaw (the cheaper alternative). The passenger/user could chose which they want to ride in & where they want to be dropped off. 


The BYD Seagull: One of the most affordable electric vehicles in the world. A fleet of marked affordable electric vehicles would be one of the symbols of the national transport service. 

Electric rickshaws could be used for short distance travel. 

All modes of national transport would have a card-system integrated into every vehicle where people could pay with the national transport card (for discounts), debit card or simple physical cash. Bus & train users would get a ticket as proof of payment to avoid boarding confusion. 

• The hailing transport service could run 7 days a week from 3 AM to 10 PM. The midibus & rail service could be 4 AM to 8 PM daily. 

• The state regulates the fares of transport across the land & gains revenue from it. 

• All transport vehicles would be state property.

Opinion on V. R. & A. R. smart glasses.

Virtual Reality is only good for things like Google Earth (& perhaps Google Mars in future), some games & motor vehicle, watercraft or aircraft simulations. Augmented Reality would only be good if integrated with a GPS or a mapping system of sorts or maybe Google Images & Google Translate, I can't imagine it being used for communication while driving any vehicle or aircraft - other than a large ship - without it being a huge inconvenience if it's used for messages or other unimportant cellphone notifications. 

Personally, the only eyewear tech that could be of great use would be of some geolocation use e. g. to isolate & highlight items in the real world. I can imagine AR devices that could locate a person, vehicle, location like those Rekkie smart snow goggles. AR devices linked to Google Maps where you could stalk down & hunt your stolen motor vehicle with some micro GPS trackers. I imagine if your smart glasses have a very high-resolution camera, you could hyper-zoom & see objects that are very, very far away including celestial or extraterrestrial objects. Perhaps even add x-ray vision because it can be done with modern technology. 

Other than internet searching images, translating text & geolocation, some night vision or heat vision could come in useful in AR glasses... just not the nightmare of recieving messages or calls in your direct view while driving. 

In any case; unless you're driving, cycling or doing military operations - these are all features that could be better put in a smartwatch than uncomfortable, heavy eyewear including the nightvision, hyper-zooming, x-ray vision, heat vision & geolocating.

Every essential item eventually becomes wearable.

From spectacles being a handheld lens, to being worn on the face to pocket watches becoming wristwatches. Everything people need eventually becomes something worn on the body. 

In future, if technological progress continues as is & resources do not deplete, I can imagine impenetrable exoskeleton suits that would be as comfortable to sleep in as they are rugged in harsh environments that could supply the body with nutrients by photosynthesis through perovskites or other technology. Maybe the human body itself would've been engineered to have photosynthesis-capable cells, eliminating the need for energy in the human body. The exoskeleton suit could make walking, running & jumping easier as well as have night vision fitted on a retractable helmet. This exoskeleton suit would be collision-proof & bulletproof along with being impenetrable to all animals. Maybe a self-cleaning or a  bacteria & odour eliminating function. It may even be fitted with an underwater breathing mechanism as well as a gas mask mechanism.

Seeing some videos on the internet has made me believe that such a thing could very well be possible in some time. We need food & shelter, someone might make devices we could wear that would eliminate the need for food & shelter.

The price we pay for Africa's development.

I think I'm part of the globalised world along with many others in Africa, & we do obtain ideas from places outside of Africa. Maybe, we thought obtaining ideas from foreign sources was free but little did we know that there's hidden royalties to be paid for such inspirations. We did not invent the wheel or firearm, so we have to pay hidden royalties for such until the world recognises that we own rights do develop such creations or equivalents. 

While the formative ingredients of modern technology (taming fire, counting, crafting tools, blacksmithing) were created in Africa - we did not develop our technologies to the level of China, Egypt, Babylon & Rome. The first modern humans with the ability to create modern technology were initially from Africa but Africa is not where they made the train, automobile, gun & the wheel. The train, automobile, gun & the wheel was made in Britain, Germany, China & Persia - respectively. So the whole world may be indebted to Britain, Germany, China, Persia & others until we can find alternatives to the modern creations we use.

My military proposals

I went all out today & gathered everything military I conceptualised for the when-chance we succeeded in our federalist initiative or if I ever got any real political power. 


ARMY: 

• Armoured vehicles with handheld RPGS & stinger missiles over tanks. 

• Several strategically-placed light tanks. 

• Petrol & electric motorcycles: Painted brown, use airless tyres. Petrol for border control & electric for missions & combat. 

• Mechanics to check all the vehicles every fortnight or after extended use. 


NAVY: 

• A few helicopter carriers instead of fighter jet carriers. 

• A few submarines. 

• A few destroyers/armed yachts. 

• A few dozen speedboats. For patrolling the coast (unarmed) & for attack (armed & painted navy). 

• A few dozen jet skis for patrolling & reconnaissance along national water bodies. 

• A mechanics team for the sea vessels. 


AIRFORCE: 

• Several Chinook-type cargo helicopters. 

• Two dozen of the latest generation Gripen jets. 

• Several dozen attack helicopters. 

• About 20 mosquito helicopters or Jetson One drones

• A drone research & drone manufacturing team. 

• Mechanics for maintenance of aircraft. 


CYBER-SECURITY: 

• Protection from cyber-attacks. 

• Developing communications systems & state websites. 

• Hacking enemy software & computer systems. 


BIOWEAPONS & BIOTECHNOLOGY: 

• This branch of the military is mostly laboratories across the land. 

• Researching viruses, diseases, pathogens, poisons & venoms. And developing cures. 

• Devices, medicines, supplements & prosthetics to improve soldier's livelihoods.

What a team sports game should be...

I've played a few mobile games - I've played the old Java PES, Real Football on Tizen, FIFA 19 from iOS App store, FIFA 22 from Playstore & I've picked up some things... In older games you'd unlock teams when winning a tournament & now you unlock players to build a team & to me it just doesn't feel the same. And now that FIFA has taken it's name off of the game (EA FC), I wonder why simple, older formats aren't used. 

• Initially, getting a lower ranked team in a tournament & unlocking teams as you beat them. 
• Tournaments available could be a multitude of international, continental & domestic leagues. 
• Creating your own fictional players. 
• Creating a team (with your own custom kit) from any of the players in the world which would participate in any of the available tournaments in the game. 
• Competing with other gamers online with your own team of stars & not players the algorithm chose for you. 
• Ability to play offline: Because while NBA Live on Android is a great game, you often can't play it offline.

I've played the NBA game on Android & the old Java AND1 game years ago... the old AND1 game was more fun & I think the above format above could be used for a FIBA game. 

Some guy surely wants to be Lazio competing in Serie A, or São Paolo in Copa Libertadores, TP Mazembe in the Club World Cup or even Azerbaijan in the World Cup. The thing is not everybody wants to build their own team, some just want to pick a known team, play a friendly or compete in a tournament. 

As an African football fan, I would love to see African tournaments being displayed in a game. I'd love to have the option of being Al Ahly, Enyimba or another African team participating in the CAF Champions League or even pick a national team to play in AFCON. 

Maybe there could even be an option to download any specific league you want worldwide. You could download the New Zealand league & play as a team in that league or a team you made on the game. 

If Konami, EA & especially Gameloft would get on to something like this. It could be one of most popular games around. Licensing issues & FIFPro would be worth it if the game keeps this simple format. 

The same for the FIBA game. The option of playing Euroleague, G-League, BAL or Intercontinental Cup & creating your own team, players & custom kits would be a breath of fresh air for all basketball fans.

The real problem with renewables.

The problem with renewable energy is not always energy production because the wind always blows & the sun will always shine. Renewables are also scalable depending on the amount of energy you need. The problem with renewables is storing the energy. On a cloudy day, photovoltaics still work & need that energy to be stored. There have been lots of breakthroughs in making industrial scale batteries for power production. Many battery manufacturering methods involve child labour & polluting the environment for indigenous communities while some batteries can be manufactured with simple salt. Also, with renewables, I'm of the belief that batteries are used more frequently than with coal, hydrogen & nuclear. This causes batteries to lose efficiency over time. Some batteries are created in consideration of this problem & can be easily recycled without much pollutants. For industrial needs, a battery for renewable energy needs; 1) to be resilient for long term use, 2) made with abundant, easily found materials [e. g. iron, carbon, sodium] & 3) should be easily recyclable for future use.
